Chapel Hill, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina gymnastics team will be represented by five gymnasts who have qualified for the upcoming NCAA Regional meet to be held in Athens, Ga. Junior Brooke Wilson and sophomore Monica Middleton will compete in this year's regional meet after being the Tar Heels' only representatives last season. Joining them this year are seniors Julie Pasqualini and Erica Roberts and sophomore Lisa Companioni.
Wilson will be competing at the NCAA Regionals in the all-around competition after posting a career-high and school record score of 39.425 this season against Rhode Island. This marks Wilson's third-straight year to compete at the regional meet. Last season Wilson finished ninth in the all-around and earned a spot as second alternate for the NCAA National Championships with a 14th place national qualifying score.
Middleton will compete on vault after recording a personal-best 9.800 against James Madison this season. Middleton performed in the all-around during last year's regional meet and finished in 21st place.
Qualifying for their first regional meet are Pasqualini on bars and Roberts and Companioni on beam. Pasqualini recorded a personal-best 9.875 on bars this season against William & Mary while Companioni qualified for regionals with a career-high 9.875 on beam against Towson and Yale.
Roberts qualified on beam this past weekend at the EAGL Championships after her personal high score of 9.850 that landed her in a three-way tie for first place. Roberts will unfortunately not be able to compete at the regional meet due to a recent back injury.
Seniors Meredith McDermott and Megan Piper will serve as first alternates for the all-around and bars respectively.
The NCAA Regional Meet will be held on Saturday, April 1st at the University of Georgia in Athens. The meet will begin at 6:00 p.m.
