CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's tennis team edged out No. 23 Notre Dame 4-3 on Saturday, capturing Sam Paul's 100th win during his tenure as the Tar Heels' head coach. The win was North Carolina's first win over a Top-25 team since April 6, 1997, when the team defeated No. 25 Virginia, 6-1. The Tar Heels, ranked No. 28 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, have now won seven consecutive matches and have compiled a 10-2 dual-match record.
Notre Dame won two of three doubles matches to win the doubles point, but North Carolina dominated in singles, winning four of the six. Assaf Drori and Chad Riley were early winners for the Tar Heels, while Tripp Phillips and David Cheatwood both lost tough, three-set matches. Marcio Petrone won two tiebreakers to win at #4 singles, and Trystan Meniane's 7-6, 7-6 win at #5 singles clinched the match for the Tar Heels.
Sam Paul came to North Carolina in 1989 as the assistant coach, but took over as head coach in April 1993. He has led his teams to five NCAA tournament bids and coached two All-America selections during his six years as head coach.
The Tar Heels will host NC State on Tuesday, March 28, in a 2:30 p.m. match at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center as the team looks to improve to 3-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
