CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 6 North Carolina used a 17-hit attack to score a 5-2 win over NC State Saturday afternoon in front of 2,935 fans at Boshamer Stadium. The win is Carolina's first in Atlantic Coast Conference play, as the Tar Heels improve to 23-5 overall and 1-4 in the ACC. NC State drops to 16-9, 5-3 in the ACC.
Ryan Snare scattered six hits, all singles, over seven complete innings for his fifth win. The Wolfpack managed just one unearned run against Snare. Mike Sollie (3-3) allowed three Tar Heel runs on 10 hits in 3.2 innings of work for the loss.
"We thought it was important to get off to a good start and put some pressure on them, and we did that in the first inning with a couple of hits," said UNC head coach Mike Fox. "We had a lot of hits for just five runs, but you have to give NC State a lot of credit. In these ACC rival games you know they're never over until the last out. I thought our players responded well today."
Carolina notched multiple hits in each of the first six innings. Adam Greenberg set the tone with a leadoff single to left field in the first and a Tyrell Godwin single sent him home for the 1-0 lead. Greenberg, who added an RBI single in the sixth, reached base in all five at bats and finished the game 4-for-4 to extend his team-high hitting streak to 19 games.
In the second, Matt McCay led off with an infield single and he advanced to third on Sean Farrell's double down the left field line. McCay scored his first of two runs on the afternoon on Chad Prosser's ground out to short.
After NC State answered with an unearned run in the third, Carolina extended its lead to 3-1 in the fourth when McCay scored on a wild pitch by Sollie. Two runs in the sixth made Carolina's lead 5-1 before NC State's Josh Schmitt doubled down the left field line off UNC reliever Derrick DePriest to score Mike Prochaska in the seventh. Two batters reached base with two outs in the ninth, but with the potential tying run at the plate, DePriest struck out Dan Mooney to seal the win.
Godwin finished a 4-for-4 day with four singles, while McCay, Dan Moylan and Farrell each had two hits apiece.
The Tar Heels and Wolfpack conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium. Carolina hosts non-conference opponent Coastal Carolina Tuesday at 3 p.m. and has a three-game set next weekend with Clemson. The Tar Heels and Tigers play Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., with Sunday's first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
