Baseball Takes Series With 4-1 Win Over NC State

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sean Farrell paced North Carolina with two home runs as the sixth-ranked Tar Heels topped NC State 4-1 Sunday afternoon in Atlantic Coast Conference baseball action at Boshamer Stadium. After dropping the series opener on Friday to the Wolfpack, Carolina won the final two games of the weekend to improve to 24-5 overall and 2-4 in the ACC. NC State drops to 16-10, 5-4 in the ACC.
Ryan Earey pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief for the win. The junior right-hander is 3-0 and he allowed just one Wolfpack hit after taking over for UNC starter Chris Elmore in the sixth. Mike Prochaska gave up four runs on nine hits over 6.1 innings to take the loss. The Wolfpack freshman is now 2-1 on the season.
NC State's Brian Wright scored the game's first run on an error by UNC third baseman Chris Maples in the fifth. But Sean Farrell answered for the Tar Heels in the bottom half of the inning with his sixth home run of the year to tie the game 1-1.
Farrell's second homer of the afternoon and his seventh of the season helped break the game open in the seventh. After Maples singled to lead off the inning, Farrell homered to right center field to push the UNC advantage to 3-1. Dan Moylan's fielder's choice scored Chad Prosser for Carolina's fourth run.
Along with Farrell, who was 2-for-4 with three RBI, Adam Greenberg, Moylan and Maples each had two hits for the Tar Heels. Greenberg has now hit in 20 straight games and he leads the team with a .419 batting average. Brian Wright and Andy Baxter led NC State's 10-hit attack with two-hits apiece.
Elmore gave up just one unearned run on nine hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out four while walking one NCSU batter.
Carolina hosts non-conference opponent Coastal Carolina Tuesday at 3 p.m. and has a three-game set next weekend with Clemson. The Tar Heels and Tigers play Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., with Sunday's first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
