RALEIGH, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's crew team continued its 2000 campaign with mixed results Saturday on Lake Wheeler in the ACC/Big Ten Double Dual. In the morning race, the Tar Heels' varsity boat was bested by Michigan, finishing at 6:51.65, behind the Wolverines' time of 6:34.58. In the afternoon race, North Carolina put up a great effort against Ohio State, yet fell to the Buckeyes by a five-second margin, 6:42.35 to 6:48.03.

While the Tar Heels were out-powered by the top-ten ranked boats from Michigan and Ohio State, North Carolina coach Joel Furtek was pleased by the performance of his team.

"This was another great day of racing," he said. "It was a challenge going against two top teams. Michigan and Ohio State have a lot of speed, but we were able to apply the lessons we learned last week in California."

Furtek also had high praise for the Lake Wheeler race site.

"The city of Raleigh has an outstanding facility," he said. "We are excited to be able to host so many good groups. We would have liked to have come out with more wins, but we got some good experience."

The Tar Heels next compete April 1 at home against Georgetown.
