Chapel Hill, N.C. - Eighth-ranked North Carolina topped Coastal Carolina 10-3 Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium, as the Tar Heels used six unearned runs and a four-run eighth inning to put away the Chanticleers and improve to 25-5 on the season. Coastal dropped to 21-9.
Coastal Carolina took advantage of three walks and managed two hits to score three quick runs on UNC starter Scott Autrey in the first before Matt Tanner took the mound and closed out the first inning for the Tar Heels. Tanner (1-1) allowed four hits in four scoreless innings for his first UNC victory. Derrick DePriest entered the game in the top of the seventh and did not allow a run while striking out three batters en route to his fifth save.
Coastal starter Justin Sturge dropped to 1-1 after giving up four runs, all unearned, on seven hits over 4.1 innings. He walked four UNC batters.
Down 3-0 early, Carolina answered with two unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning to pull within 3-2. Chad Prosser's fielder's choice scored Ryan Earey and Chris Maples scored on an infield single by Adam Greenberg. Greenberg, who was 2-for-3 with two RBI, has hit in 21 straight games and leads the team with a .426 batting average.
The Tar Heels added two more unearned runs in the fourth inning to move ahead of the Chanticleers 4-3. Matt McCay led off the inning and reached base on an error by first baseman Justin Owens. A Greenberg sacrifice fly knocked him home and Tyrell Godwin singled home Dan Moylan for his second hit of the game. Godwin was 2-for-5 on the afternoon.
Greenberg scored Carolina's first earned run of the game in a two-run sixth inning. Greenberg led off the inning with a single to left and later scored on an unorthodox double steal that saw Moylan reach second base as the freshman centerfielder went home. Moylan also later scored in the inning.
Four UNC runs in the eighth inning helped secure the Carolina victory. Greenberg, Moylan, Clay Hooper and Sean Farrell all scored. Farrell and Russ Adams had RBI singles, Ryan Earey had a sacrifice fly to center field and Farrell came home on a wild pitch by Scott Sturkie.
Mario Gianfortune and Doug Marty led the Chants at the plate with two hits apiece.
Carolina hosts top-ranked Clemson for a three-game series this weekend at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels and Tigers play Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. (please note time change), and Sunday's first pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
