CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Kristin Off scored with 1:30 left in the fourth overtime period to give the No. 5-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team a 14-13 win over No.1 Maryland Sunday afternoon at Frances E. Henry Stadium. On the winning goal, Erin McInnes ran behind the Maryland net and fed Off, who almost immediately deposited the ball in the lower left corner of the goal for the win. With the win, Carolina improves to 2-1 on the season. Maryland, which had won 28 games in a row dating back to 1998, falls to 1-1.
The Terrapins now have won 39 of their last 42 games, with all three of their losses coming to the Tar Heels. Carolina defeated the Terps twice in 1998, on March 8 in Chapel Hill and on Apr. 18 in the ACC Tournament in Charlottesville, Va. Sunday's game was also the second in row between Maryland and Carolina to go to overtime. In the 1999 ACC Tournament in Chapel Hill, the Terps defeated the Tar Heels, 19-17, in overtime.
Kellie Thompson, who scored four times in Friday's 14-6 win over Johns Hopkins at Henry Stadium, had four goals for Carolina for the second straight game. Off scored three times for UNC, while Meghann Mohler and Gray MacNair each scored twice. Jen Adams had three goals and an assist and Allison Comito had a goal and three assists for the Terps.
Carolina took a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game on a free position goal by Mohler. Maryland quickly responded with four straight goals in a five-minute span to take a 4-1 lead. Adams scored twice and Comito had two assists during the flurry. The Tar Heels fought back and scored four straight goals of their own to take a 5-4 lead. Christine McPike and Off each scored once and Thompson scored twice during that span for UNC. The Terps then rallied for three more goals to take a 7-5 lead before Mohler scored for the Tar Heels with 0:18 left in the half to cut the Maryland lead to 7-6 at the half. Maryland outshot Carolina, 13-8, in the first half.
The two teams traded goals in the second half, forcing five ties before going to overtime. Quinn Carney scored with 0:09 left in regulation to force overtime. MacNair scored twice in the half for UNC.
Maryland's Adams scored the only goal of the first overtime, and when Meredith Egan scored for the Terps in the second OT, Carolina was down by two goals with 1:31 left to play in the second extra period. The Tar Heels battled back, as Thompson fed Off for a score with 1:14 left and then fed Julie Kickham for the game-tying goal with 0:45 left in the second OT.
Neither team scored in the third OT, which was the first sudden victory overtime period.
The Tar Heels return to action on Friday when they host Loyola at Fetzer Field at 5:00 p.m.
