CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina sophomore Kellie Thompson, who scored eight goals in two weekend victories for the Tar Heels, was named the National Women's Player of the Week by Inside Lacrosse on Monday.
Thompson had four goals, including the game-winner, in Friday's 14-6 victory over Johns Hopkins at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill. Thompson also scored four goals and had two key assists in Sunday's four-overtime win over No. 1-ranked and five-time defending national champion Maryland. Her two assists both came in the second overtime period as UNC trailed by two goals with just over a minute remaining. Thompson assisted Kristin Off and Julie Kickham on a pair of goals that forced a third overtime. Carolina eventually won in the fourth overtime period.
In addition to her heroics over the weekend, Thompson had an assist in Carolina's season-opening loss at James Madison last Tuesday.
The Tar Heels return to action next weekend, when they host Loyola on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and Vanderbilt on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be played at Fetzer Field on the UNC campus.
