Women Golfers In 10th After Two Days Of Tourney

ATHENS, Ga. -- Carolina Women's golf team finished tenth with a 614 total after two days of play in the Liz Murphy Collegiate Classic taking place at the University of Georgia. Sophomore Heather Angell finished sixth, the Tar Heels top finisher, with a score of 144. Duke University leads the field of seventeen with a 573 total followed by Louisiana State University at 591 and a tie between the University of Georgia and Auburn University at 601.
Angell, the Tar Heels top individual finisher, scored a 144 (74, 70). Angell's 70 was the Tar Heels best finish of the second day and one of only two 70's scored on the second day. Also finishing in the top twenty, senior Marcy Newton finishing in a four-way tie for 16th place with a total score of 150 (74,76). Beth Bauer of Duke finished in first place with a 139 (67, 72), Danielle Downey of Auburn finished second with a 142 (70,71), and Maria-Garcia Estrada (75,68) and Kristina Engstrom (71,72) both of Duke University tied for fourth with a 143 total. Estrada was the only player to score sub-70 on the second day of the tournament.
Rounding out the competition for the Tar Heels were Abby Spector who totaled 159, Britta Olson 163 total and Kim Smith 173 total
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Sunday.
