
No. 6 Carolina Women's Lacrosse Shoots Down No. 16 Penn State, 14-13

BALTIMORE, MD. - Sophomore Kellie Thompson tied a school record by scoring six goals as the No. 6 University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team defeated No. 16 Penn State, 14-13, on Thursday afternoon on the campus of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. With the win, the Tar Heels improves to 8-4 on the season. Penn State falls to 5-7.
Thompson established a new career high with her six goals and also added an assist for the Tar Heels. She equalled the school single-game record for goals. It was the fifth time in the program's five-year history that a Tar Heel has scored six goals in a game. Most recently, Erin McGinnis scored six times versus Maryland in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament semifinals in Chapel Hill.
In the first half, UNC led, 8-1, before Penn State scored four goals in a row to cut the lead to 8-5. The Tar Heels held on for the win despite being outscored, 8-6, the rest of the way.
Gray MacNair had two goals for the Tar Heels, while Christine McPike, Meghann Mohler, Julie Kickham, Amy Havrilla, Betsy Gaines and Lindsay Stone each scored once. Erin McInnes lead UNC with two assists. McPike and Gaines also added assists for Carolina.
Julie Tice led the Nittany Lions with four goals and four assists, while Jennifer Webb had four goals and one assist. B.J. Lucey scored three times and Molly Ford twice for PSU.
Mellisa Coyne started in goal for Carolina and went the distance, notching five saves. Megan Ames made 11 saves in goal for the Nittany Lions.
The Tar Heels return to action on Sunday when they host Ohio State at 1:00 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
