Chapel Hill, N.C. -- No. 12 North Carolina spotted Maryland eight runs in the top of the third but battled back for a wild 13-11 win at rain-soaked Boshamer Stadium Saturday afternoon. The game began nearly three hours late due to rain and featured 24 runs, 27 hits and eight errors. UNC stands 32-9 overall, 6-8 in the conference with its fourth straight win, while Maryland falls to 13-24, 0-11 in the ACC.
The Terps tagged UNC starter Eric Henderson for six runs, four earned, on six hits over 2.1 innings. Henderson pitched to eight Maryland batters in the third and was replaced with just one out in Maryland's big inning by Finnerty. Finnerty (5-0) gave up two more runs in the inning but pitched scoreless fourth and fifth innings for the win. Derrick DePriest picked up his eighth save of the year with 3.2 scoreless innings. The senior closer also allowed just one hit and struck out two.
Maryland reliever Mike Dallmeyer (1-2) gave up five runs on six hits while striking out two over 1.2 innings for the loss. Starter Mark Martin gave up eight runs, five earned, over 3.1 innings.
Down 8-1, Carolina rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third to pull within 8-5. Chad Prosser and Adam Greenberg both had RBIs and Matt McCay's two-out single knocked in two runs for the Tar Heels.
A six-run fourth inning propelled Carolina to an 11-8 lead. After loading the bases on Dallmeyer with two outs, McCay blasted a grand slam to left for four of UNC's six runs on the inning. McCay finished the game 3-for-4 with a career-high six runs batted in.
Maryland scored three more runs in the sixth inning but UNC runs in the fifth and sixth innings were enough to hold off the visiting Terps.
In addition to McCay's big day at the plate, Prosser was 3-for-4, scoring a career-best three runs and knocking in two, while Dan Moylan, Clay Hooper and Ryan Earey all had two-hit days for the Tar Heels, who belted 15 hits overall.
The Tar Heels and Terrapins conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1:30 p.m..
