CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Just two days after Tar Heel men's soccer player Michael Bucy was named to the first team, University of North Carolina women's soccer player Lindsay Stoecker has merited one of the top academic awards in the nation as Thursday she was named to the prestigious second team of the 2000 GTE Academic All-America University Division Women's Fall and Winter At-Large Team. The GTE teams, which have existed since the 1950s, are the oldest and most reputable of the collegiate Academic All-America teams. They have been sponsored by GTE since the 1980s and they are chosen by a select panel of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The Raleigh, N.C. native and graduate of Broughton High School joins fellow soccer player Bucy on these prestigious teams. Ironically, Bucy is also a native of Raleigh, N.C. where he attended Sanderson High School. The At-Large Team honors the top scholar-athletes from across the nation who participate in fall and winter sports for women with the exception of volleyball and women's basketball, which honor their own squads.
Stoecker, who has started on defense each of the past two years for Carolina, carries a 3.51 grade point average while pursuing a double major in anthropology and Spanish at UNC. Stoecker was the Most Valuable Player of the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Tournament. She played on UNC teams which won NCAA championships in 1996, 1997 and 1999.
