UNC Tennis Team Advances to Semifinals of ACC Championship

NORCROSS, GA. - The 20th-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team defeated Wake Forest 4-1 to advance to the semifinals of the ACC Championship, being held at the Racquet Club of the South in Norcross, Ga. The Tar Heels, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, improve to 16-4 overall with the win. The team will face No. 3 seed Clemson (17-15) at 11 a.m. Saturday in a semifinal match.
The Tar Heels jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the Deacons by winning the doubles point. Assaf Drori and Greg Archer won at #1 doubles, and Marcio Petrone and Tyne Brownlow won at #3 doubles.
In singles action, the Tar Heels won at #1, #4 and #5 singles. Sophomore Marcio Petrone defeated Wake Forest's Mike Berger 6-2, 6-2 at #4 singles, and Trystan Meniane beat Justin Kaufmann 6-4, 6-0 at #5 singles. Tar Heel senior Tripp Phillips clinched the match for UNC, defeating Raul Munoz at #1 singles 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. Carolina senior Assaf Drori played a tough match at #2 singles, but lost to Michael Murray (3-6, 6-3, 7-6 [4]).
In other ACC news, the Tar Heels led the league with three players winning their respective singles flights during the regular season. In addition, two other players finished second in their flights. David Cheatwood won at #3 singles with a 7-1 record, and Marcio Petrone won at #4 singles with a 7-1 ACC record. At #6 singles, Chad Riley won the flight with a 6-2 record. Tripp Phillips was the flight runner-up at #1 singles with a 7-1 record, and Trystan Meniane was the runner-up at #5 singles with a 4-3 record.
Should the Tar Heels win in their semifinal match against Clemson on Saturday, they would play in the championship match at noon Sunday.
