CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Four high school standouts,Jennifer "Jenna" Bischoff, Heather Hughes, Lauren Looper and Jessica Robinson, have signed letters of intent to play for the University of North Carolina softball program. The four join three fall signees,Emily Price, Natashalyn Snipes and Dionne Streete,to make up the Tar Heels' 2000-2001 freshman class.
Bischoff is a pitcher/first baseman from Leon High in Tallahassee, Fla. "She's the type pitcher we like to have, in that she's also a good hitter and a position player," Papa says. "She is our only out-of-state spring signee, but she has strong roots at UNC. Both of her parents went to Carolina and she has attended our camps for years."
Hughes was her team and conference MVP as a sophomore at Southview High in Hope Mills, N.C., but missed her junior season with a knee injury. Now back on the field, she plays in the outfield and pitches. "Heather is a very versatile player and we expect her to contribute early on as an outfielder," Papa says.
Looper, from Charlotte's North Mecklenburg High, plays shortstop and could also see time at other infield positions. "Lauren is a talented athlete with good speed and good hitting ability," Papa says. "She'll give us more depth up the middle."
Robinson has been a catcher at Asheboro (N.C.) High, but is projected to play at first or third at UNC. "She has quick hands and wrists with the potential to develop as a very good hitter," Papa says. "As a whole, this group of spring signees is really going add depth and speed to our team."
The Tar Heels, 45-15 on the season, begin play on Saturday as the top seed at the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament in Tallahassee, Fla.
