The University of North Carolina's annual spring Blue-White Football Scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday, April 8, at 3:30 p.m. at Kenan Stadium. There is no admission charge for the event, though fans are encouraged to bring canned goods to support the North Carolina Food Bank. Gates 2, 5, 6 and 7 will open to the public at 2:30 p.m., and there will be canned good collection bins at each entrance.
Included in Saturday's festivities will be two contests at halftime for UNC students. For males, a snapping and punting event, and for females, a kicking and throwing contest. All interested students should call the Carolina Football Office at 966-2575.
Following the game, the Tar Heels will sign autographs for fans on the field. They will be joined by several past UNC standouts who are current or former NFL players.
Four UNC stars of the 1940s will serve as honorary coaches for the Blue-White game. Joe Neikirk, a center from 1948-49, will be the honorary head coach the Blue team, while Jim Camp, who lettered at UNC from 1944-47, will serve as his assistant. For the White team, Bob Cox, a letterman from 1945-48, will be the honorary head coach of the White team, while Walt Pupa, a letterwinner from 1945-47, will be his assistant. The Tar Heels went to three bowl games in that era, the 1947 and 1949 Sugar Bowls and the 1950 Cotton Bowl. Camp led Carolina with 68 yards rushing in the 1947 Sugar Bowl, while Pupa scored a second-quarter touchdown for the Tar Heels in that game.
The Tar Heels return 47 letterwinners, including 14 starters, from last year's squad which ended the season with wins over arch-rivals NC State and Duke.
