University of North Carolina freshman tailback Willie Parker (Clinton, N.C.) was one of the standouts of Wednesday's two-hour football scrimmage at Kenan Stadium. Statistics were not kept, but Parker had several long runs. He is the lone scholarship tailback working out this spring and has been splitting time with walkon Michael Harris, who also had some nice runs.
"Willie continued his fine play this spring and I thought the quarterbacks as a group made some improvement,"says head coach Carl Torbush. "Antwon Black, Luke Huard and Richard Moore have worked hard to gain an understanding of the offense. (Wide receiver) Sam Aiken helped them look pretty good out there with some exciting runs after catches. Defensively, (ends) Joey Evans and Malcolm Stewart were impressive and Dexter Reid had an interception and showed why we think he is going to become a fine player."
Ronald Curry took part in pre-scrimmage drills with the quarterbacks, but did not play in the full contact scrimmage.
The Tar Heels conclude spring practice with the annual Spring Game Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free. Kenan Stadium Gates 2, 5, 6 and 7 open at 2:30 p.m. Student-athletes and coaches will be available after the hour-long scrimmage for autographs.
