UNC Women's Golf Squad Receives Bid To NCAA East Regional

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina's women's golf team was one of 24 teams to receive a bid to participate in the NCAA East Regional. The 54-hole event will be played May 11-13 at the Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio.
In addition to the 24 teams, six individuals (not on those teams) received a bid to play in the regional. The top 11 teams and three individuals not from those squads advance on to the NCAA Championships which will be played May 24-27 in Sun River, Ore.
Three of the five Atlantic Coast Conference teams received a bid. In addition to Carolina, top-ranked Duke and Wake Forest will be among the participants.
The Tar Heels, ranked 30th in the polls have posted four top five finishes this year. They posted a third-place finish at the ACC Championship and tied for fourth at the Bryan National Collegiate this spring. Last fall, Carolina placed fourth at the Auburn Tiger/Derby Invitational and tied for fifth place at the Franklin Street Trust/Tar Heel Invitational.
The Tar Heels have been led by senior Marcy Newton, from High Point, N.C. Newton was the individual medallist at the Bryan National Collegiate, the third victory of her collegiate career. Newton has posted top 10 finishes in seven of Carolina's nine tournaments this year. Heather Angell, a sophomore from Winston-Salem, N.C., has carded five top 25 finishes this year. Abby Spector, a freshman from Waterville, Maine, has posted four top 30 finishes in her first year as a Tar Heel, including a tie for sixth place at the ACC Championship. Beth Lever, a sophomore from Kiawah Island, S.C., has posted two top 25 finishes this year while Britta Olson, a junior from Golden, Col., has two top 20 finishes this year.
Carolina has received a bid to the NCAA East Regional each year since the regional format was instituted in women's golf in 1993. This marks Carolina's eighth appearance in the NCAA East Regional.
