CHAPEL HILL -- North Carolina freshman centerfielder Adam Greenberg has been named the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year in a vote of the league's nine head coaches.
Greenberg, who was also named second-team All-ACC, leads the Tar Heel regulars in batting average (.381), hits (90), runs (61), triples (7), stolen bases (26) and multi-hit games (31). He has three leadoff home runs and earlier this season he put together a team-best 21-game hitting streak. His seven triples are tied for the second most ever in a single-season at Carolina and last month Greenberg was one of the first 20 invites for the U.S. National Team trials to be held this June in Tucson, Ariz.
"We're just thrilled for Adam to have received this honor from the ACC coaches, and I think it's very well deserved," head coach Mike Fox said. "The way Adam started the season and then was able to maintain that pace all year has just been tremendous.
"I think you have to credit Adam's ability to adjust to the grind of college baseball, and his physical and mental toughness has a lot to do with his success."
The only other Tar Heel to win ACC Rookie of the Year honors was Brian Roberts in 1997.
Greenberg and the Tar Heels will face Penn State on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in its first game of the Regional at Upper Montclair, N.J. Carolina is the No. 2 seed in the four-team, double-elimination NCAA Regional.
