UNC's Newton Selected For U.S.-Japan Matches

ORLANDO, Fla. - North Carolina golfer Marcy Newton, a senior from High Point, N.C., is one of four women's golfers selected to represent the United States at the 25th annual U.S.-Japan Matches which will be played June 25-July 1 in Rancho Murietta, Calif. Besides Newton, the remainder of the team includes Danielle Downey of Auburn, Carrie Summerhays of Brigham Young and Angie Yoon of Nevada-Reno. Christy Coggin, the head women's golf coach at South Carolina, will coach the U.S. Women's Team.
Newton recently completed play in the NCAA Championships, tying for 99th place with a 318 total in the 72 hole event which was played at the Crosswater Club in Sunriver, Ore. She was named to this year's All-ACC team marking her third appearance on the team ('97, '99, '00) and she was selected the ACC Rookie of the Year in 1997. Newton was selected second-team All-America last year by the National Golf Coaches Association. She was also named to the first-team Golfweek/Sagarin Mid-Atlantic/East District Team in 1999. Newton has captured the individual championship at three tournaments during her collegiate career - the 2000 Bryan National Collegiate, the 1999 Fripp Island Intercollegiate and the 1997 Betsy Rawls Longhorn Classic. Newton also played in the U.S. Amateur in '98 and '99, making it to the semi-finals in '98. She was also a participant in the 1998 U.S. Women's Open.
