Carolina Golfer Marcy Newton Selected To All-ACC Team

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Marcy Newton, a senior on the University of North Carolina women's golf team, was selected to the 2000 All-Atlantic Coast Conference team announced today by the conference office. This marks Newton's third appearance on the team as she was named to the 1999 and 1997 All-ACC teams as well as being the ACC Rookie of the Year in '97.
Duke, ranked second nationally, dominated the All-ACC team as five of the six selections are Blue Devils -- Beth Bauer (Cramerton, N.C.), Candy Hannemann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Maria Garcia-Estrada (Tenerise, Spain), Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn) and Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden).
Duke sophomore Beth Bauer was selected Player of the Year while teammate Garcia-Estrada was named ACC Rookie of the Year. Duke's head coach Dan Brooks was named Coach of the Year for the fifth consecutive year.
Newton captured the individual championship of the Bryan National Intercollegiate earlier this spring posting a 219 total. This was the third victory of her collegiate career as she also won the '99 Fripp Island Intercollegiate and the '97 Betsy Rawls Longhorn Classic. She has posted seven top 10 finishes and eight top 20 finishes this year. Newton was selected second-team All-America last year and was named to the first-team GolfWeek/Sagarin Mid-Atlantic/East District Team in 1999.
The Tar Heels, ranked 29th in the latest MasterCard Collegiate Rankings, will play in the NCAA East Regional May 11-13 at the Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio. The Scarlet Course features a par 72, 6,037-yard layout.
