CHAPEL HILL -- University of North Carolina assistant football coach Ron Case is scheduled to undergo quintuple bypass surgery today at UNC Hospitals. Case, 62, has coached defensive backs at UNC since 1996. He mentored cornerback Dre' Bly, the only three-time first-team All-America football player in Atlantic Coast Conference history. Case should be out of action for six to eight weeks, but is expected to return to full duties.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ron and his family," says head coach Carl Torbush. "Ron will be missed, but I have been told he should be fully recovered in time for preseason practice. Ron is one of the most well-liked people in coaching and will have plenty of people pulling for him. Our players really love competing for him and learning the game of football from him."
