Newton Reaches US Amateur Final

Former University of North Carolina golfer Marcy Newton reached the finals of the 2000 United States Women's Amateur Friday with a 1-up victory over 14-year-old Aree Wonglukiet in Portland, Ore. Newton will meet Laura Myerscough in Saturday's 36-hole championship.
A native of High Point, N.C., Newton was the Tar Heels' team captain as a senior in 1999-2000. She will finish her degree in recreation and leisure studies administration this month.
