Six former University of North Carolina women's soccer players were named to the 2000 United States Olympic Team. Former Tar Heel National Player of the Year April Heinrichs, the head coach of the US Team, announced the 18-player roster on Thursday. Fifteen of the 18 players played for the US Team in the 1999 World Cup.
Forwards Mia Hamm and Cindy Parlow, midfielders Kristine Lilly and Lorrie Fair, defender Carla Overbeck and goalie Siri Mullinix will represent UNC on the Olympic Team. Hamm, Lilly and Overbeck are playing in the Olympics for the second time. In 1996, the United States won the gold medal in Atlanta. Seven former or current UNC players were on that Olympic roster.
Hamm is international soccer's alltime leading goal scorer, and Lilly has played in more international soccer games than any player ever.
