AUSTIN, TEXAS - Top-ranked North Carolina exploded for eight goals in the second half Friday night as the Tar Heels came from behind to defeat Texas 9-2 in their women's soccer season opener before a record crowd of 5,440 at Mike Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Carolina gave up a goal in the first minute of the game and it took almost 44 minutes to gain the equalizer but a goal by freshman Catherine Reddick in the last minute of the first half sparked UNC to nine goals in less than 44 minutes and a runaway victory. Meredith Florance, Susan Bush and Alyssa Ramsey, Carolina's starting striker trio, each scored two goals in the game and defender Kalli Kamholz, Florance and freshman reserve Catherine Reddick each added two assists for the victorious Tar Heels.
The Longhorns got on the scoreboard first just 40 seconds into the match when Texas freshman midfielder Kati McBain stripped UNC junior defender Danielle Borgman (Cincinnati, Ohio) of the ball in the Texas penalty area and fired the ball into the lower left corner of the goal past startled UNC goalkeeper Jenni Branam, a sophomore from Placentia, Calif. Texas had served a long ball down the right side that appeared to be rolling over the end line, but McBain hustled and took the ball away to beat a helpless Branam. Ironically, the last two times the Tar Heels have played a team coached by second-year Texas head coach Chris Petrucelli the opposing team has scored in the first minute of play. When Petrucelli was the head coach at Notre Dame in 1998, the Fighting Irish scored a goal in the first minute of the game at Fetzer Field on September 13, 1998, a match the Tar Heels went on to win 5-1.
The Tar Heels tied the score just 30 seconds before halftime on a picture perfect series of passes. Freshman midfielder Jordan Walker, a Dallas native playing in her home state of Texas, maintained control of the ball for the Tar Heels near the end line. She fed the ball back to junior midfielder Jena Kluegel (Mahtomedi, Minn.), who launched a long cross to the far side of the penalty box where freshman forward Catherine Reddick (Birmingham, Ala.) found the back of the net with a header to the left side of Texas goalkeeper Shay Wilkerson.
Carolina took its first lead of the night just 1:48 into the second half as the second of three Carolina freshman to score goals on the evening dented the scoreboard for UNC. Freshman forward Alyssa Ramsey of Cornelius, N.C. had the score as she rocketed a bullet from about 22 yards out into the lower left corner of the Texas goal. Senior defender Kalli Kamholz started the scoring sequence for the Tar Heels as her pass from beyond midfield found Ramsey on the right side. Ramsey did the rest, dribbling past her defender until she found an opening in the middle of the field to crank a left-footed shot that froze Wilkerson in her tracks.
Carolina upped the lead to 3-1 just less than four minutes after Ramsey's goal. Ramsey started the play as she flicked the ball back to senior forward Meredith Florance. Florance dribbled into the left side of the goal and fed across the goal mouth to sophomore forward Susan Bush who pushed the ball to the left of Wilkerson.
Meredith Florance then scored at the 52:35 mark to give the Tar Heels a 4-1 lead. Florance took a pass from sophomore defensive midfielder Leslie Gaston and dribbled up the middle of the field for 20 yards before her rocket of a shot from 18 yards out found the lower left corner of the Texas goal.
Alyssa Ramsey scored her second goal of the match at the 59:23 mark on a header assisted by junior midfielder Anne Remy and sophomore forward Susan Bush. Bush fed a through ball to Remy just inside the penalty area and Remy dribbled deep into the right corner of the box before centering the ball to Ramsey at the far post. Ramsey ran onto the ball and she drove the ball into the back of the netting with her head. Ramsey's goal was Carolina's fifth score in 14:53 dating back to the goal late in the first half.
The Tar Heels made the score 6-1 at the 71:29 mark as Kalli Kahmolz volleyed in Catherine Reddick's corner kick. Kamholz took Reddick's corner kick in the box, spun to her right and volleyball the ball in with her right foot.
Freshman midfielder Jordan Walker scored the first goal of her Tar Heel career at the 74:05 mark off another corner kick play. Reddick sent the corner from the left side to the head of Kamholz, who flicked the ball onto Walker, who put the ball away in a crowd directly in front of the right post.
Texas cut the Tar Heel margin to 7-2 with a little over 12 minutes to play in the game as junior forward Abby Gutowski fed a long ball to freshman midfielder Kylee Wosnuk, who eluded Kristin DePlatchett and scored into the empty net in the lower right corner.
The Tar Heels scored twice more in the final four minutes of the contest to make the final score 9-2. Florance scored her second goal of the night at 86:07. It was an unassited goal. At 87:52, Bush closed the scoring on the game's second assist from Florance. That was the eighth goal of the second half for UNC and it ended a nine-goal run in 43:22 since Reddick's goal in the final minute of the first half. The eight goals in the second half were the most by UNC in a single half October 4, 1997 when the Heels led Pennsylvania 8-0 at the half of an eventual 9-0 victory at Durham, N.C.
The nine goals were the most that Carolina has scored in a season opener since the Tar Heels defeated Tulsa 9-0 on August 31, 1990 at the SMU Classic in Dallas. The 12 assists were just one shy of the school record for assists in a game. That record is 13 against Tennessee on September 5, 1997. Carolina now leads the all-time series with the Longhorns 2-0.
The crowd of 5,440 set a University of Texas single game home attendance record. The old record was 2,597 fans set on September 24, 1999 when the Longhorns played Texas A&M at Mike Myers Stadium. It was also the 13th largest crowd to ever see the Tar Heels play in their 22-year women's soccer history and the third largest regular-season game crowd to ever watch the North Carolina program in action.
