University of North Carolina head coach Carl Torbush welcomed 20 freshmen football players to their first day on campus today. Freshmen drills begin Saturday morning.
The 20 freshmen include 18 scholarship recipients and two walk-ons. Jason Crawford, a 6-2, 215-pound tailback from Forestville, Md., signed a National Letter of Intent with the Tar Heels in February, but will attend Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia this year.
Carolina's freshmen took physicals and were issued equipment Friday. The 20 players take to the field Saturday for the start of practice. NCAA rules allow two days of freshmen-only drills before the varsity reports next Tuesday.
A pair of non-scholarship kickers joined the freshman class. They include Jeff Scudder, a 6-1, 195-pound place-kicker/punter from Springfield, Va. (Springfield High School and Hargrave Military Academy), and Jeremy Willis, a 6-1, 195-pound place-kicker from Hendersonville, Tenn. (Hendersonville High School).
All of Carolina's practices are closed to the general public.
