Freshman Practice Comes To A Close

Chapel Hill, NC ----- Carolina's football freshmen completed their second day of practices at Navy Field with a 90 minute workout under hazy skies on Monday. The Tar Heel freshman will take the next two days off from the practice field as they continue the orientation process.
Focus on the last 15-20 minutes of each practice has been on the kicking game, an area of concern entering the 2000 campaign.
"I think the kickers did some good things in these two day and all three have a chance to contribute this year," said Head Coach Carl Torbush. "The two walk-on kickers (Jeff Scudder, Jeremy Willis) had some offers from other schools and Blake Ferguson has shown promise."
All three kickers worked in a variety of drills, including punting, field goals and kickoffs.
Despite Monday's intense heat, few players seemed to be affected and Torbush called the two days of freshmen-only practice a success.
"I saw a degree of toughness out of them," said Torbush. "Things will get interesting once the varsity reports and I'm excited to see how these guys respond. You never know when you recruit if the guys are going to be as good as you think, but I feel like our coaching staff did a good job of evaluating in the recruiting process and it's obvious we signed the right guys."
The entire team will convene for its first full squad practice on Thursday, Aug. 10. Players will wear shoulder pads for the first time on Aug. 13. All practices are closed to the public.
