CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - #1 North Carolina and #17 Duke remained unbeaten Sunday afternoon as both teams recorded victories in the Nike Classic at Fetzer Field before a crowd of 2,265. UNC defeated Oregon 6-0 in the opener, while Duke downed winless South Carolina 5-1 in the second game of the doubleheader.
Six different Tar Heel players scored goals in the opener and Jena Kluegel, the Atlantic Coast Conference leader in assists, recorded three assists as UNC improved to 6-0 on the season with its 24th straight win over the past two seasons. Oregon fell to 3-4 with the loss. Duke improved to 5-0 with the win over the Gamecocks, getting a pair of goals and an assist from Sarah Pickens in the victory. South Carolina fell to 0-5 on the season.
In the first game, the Tar Heels jumped on top with a pair of goals in the first seven minutes of the game. Freshman striker Alyssa Ramsey headed in a corner kick from Kluegel at 5:07 to put the Tar Heels up 1-0 and then just 1:02 later Kim Patrick redirected a cross from Ramsey to make it 2-0. Kluegel also had an assist on the goal.
The Tar Heels broke the game open with two goals in the first eight minutes of the second half. Senior co-captain Meredith Florance scored her fifth goal of the weekend as she beat Oregon goalie Sarah Peters in one-on-one situation at 50:54. Patrick assisted on the goal. Exactly two minutes after the goal by Florance, UNC increased its lead to 4-0 as Leslie Gaston headed in a corner kick by Kluegel.
North Carolina would go on to score twice more. Freshman Carmen Watley scored her second goal in two games as the striker rammed home the rebound of an initial shot by senior co-captain Julia Marslender. Marslender recorded an assist on the play, the first point of her UNC career. Two Tar Heel freshmen combined on the final Carolina goal as Catherine Reddick took a pass from Maggie Tomecka and scored at the 73:37 mark with a shot into the left side of the net.
Duke dominated the second contest as the Blue Devils tallied twice in the first 17 minutes. Freshman Gwendolyn Oxenham finished a nice sequence at 13:29 to put the Blue Devils up 1-0. Pickens and Alexis Highsmith assisted on the goal. Just 3:05 later the Blue Devils scored again as Carly Fuller converted a penalty kick.
Pickens scored the first of her two goals at 75:46 as she took a pass from Oxenham and scored on a breakaway. South Carolina scored its only goal of the game at 78:30 as Morgan McIntyre took a cross from Megan Gutstadt and pushed the ball by Duke goalie Thora Helgadottir.
Duke scored twice more with Pickens notching her second goal at 86:10. Pickens' original shot was saved by USC goalie Elise Matthews, but Pickens poked home her own rebound for a 4-1 Blue Devil lead. Duke got on the scoreboard a fifth time at 89:17 on an own goal by the Gamecocks.
Tournament Most Valuable Players as chosen by the coaches were North Carolina's Meredith Florance, Duke's Sarah Pickens, Oregon's Chalise Baysa and South Carolina's Jessica Julin.
