For the second consecutive week, two North Carolina football players have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Players of the Week. Julius Peppers and Bosley Allen each earned the honors after big games at Wake Forest on Saturday.
Allen amassed 264 all-purpose yards at Wake and was named the ACC's specialist of the week. A 6-1, 190-pound sophomore from Bradenton, Fla., Allen returned seven punts for 153 yards in Carolina's 35-14 victory over the Demon Deacons, including a 78-yarder for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to break the game open. Allen's scoring jaunt was Carolina's first punt return for a TD since 1996 and the ninth-longest in school history. In addition, Allen had two catches for 111 yards, including a 60-yard scoring pass with 6:31 left to play in the contest.
Peppers, a 6-6, 270-pound defensive end, also played a major role in Carolina's second win of the 2000 season. The Bailey, N.C. sophomore had two quarterback sacks and returned a fumble 12 yards for the go-ahead and game-winning touchdown against the Deacons. The QB sacks were for 10 and 17 yards in losses.
Last week, OT James Wagstaff and S Billy-Dee Greenwood earned ACC Player of the Week honors following Carolina's season-opening win against Tulsa.
