The University of North Carolina men's soccer team will play host to the annual Nike Carolina Classic this weekend at Fetzer Field. The Classic will feature UNC Greensboro, Kentucky and Denver in addition to Carolina, with doubleheaders scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights in Chapel Hill.
The event also will serve as the backdrop to Carolina's Alumni Weekend, as former UNC men's soccer players return to campus to take in two games on the 2000 Tar Heel schedule. Former Tar Heel All-America Chad Ashton (UNC '90) is Denver's head coach and will be returning to his alma mater to coach against his mentor, Carolina head coach Elmar Bolowich.
The Nike Carolina Classic will feature doubleheaders on both Friday and Saturday evenings. On Friday evening, UNC Greensboro will face Kentucky at 5:00 p.m., followed by Carolina against Denver at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, UNC Greensboro will play Denver at 5:00 p.m., followed by Carolina versus Kentucky at 7:30 p.m.
Carolina is 4-1 thus far in 2000 and have won three consecutive games. On Tuesday night, Carolina got goals from four different players and shutout Davidson, 4-0, at Fetzer Field. Chris Carrieri, Grant Porter, Ryan Kneipper and Michael Bucy all scored for UNC. After upsetting No. 4 Clemson on the road last weekend, the Tar Heels are ranked in three national polls this week - Soccer America (No. 15), the NSCAA coaches' poll (No. 25) and SoccerTimes.com (No. 20).
