
Carolina Volleyball Falls to Santa Clara 3-1

CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina volleyball team suffered its first home loss this season to 21st ranked Santa Clara 3-1(15-17, 15-7, 15-7, 15-4) in the championship match of the Carolina/Nike Classic. Carolina finished second overall and setter Eve Rackham and outside hitter Casey Simpson were named to the All-Tournament team.
Simpson tallied 10 kills and 11 digs and Rackham posted 48 assists, nine digs and five blocks. Laura Greene tallied a double-double with 18 kills, 14 digs and contributed three of Carolina's 15 team blocks.
UNC led early in game one with the Broncos rallying back to tie the score 8-8. The Tar Heels answered with a 4-0 run led by Nicole Reis who registered 2 kills and a solo block. The Broncos tied the score three more times before Reis blasted another 2 kills to win the game, 17-15.
In game two, the teams battled back and forth without allowing a single point until the Broncos went on a 4-0 run. Carolina rallied back to 5-5 with a kill from junior middle hitter Krista Buchholz. The Tar Heels would never lead the match and the Santa Clara defense held UNC to a .150 hitting percentage. Santa Clara took game two, 15-7.
Game three was similar to two with the teams exchanging side-outs holding score at 4-5. The Tar Heels struggled to retain the lead, but the Broncos outhit the Carolina .333 to .255. Santa Clara surged ahead and took the game, 15-7.
Santa Clara controlled game four and jumped to a 9-1 lead. Reis registered four kills for the game but the team's efforts were not enough. The Broncos took game four and the match.
Santa Clara was led by tournament MVP Amy Kohl who posted a match-high 28 kills. Setter Roz Pelayo tallied 69 assists and Ynez Carrasco notched 16 kills and 24 digs.
Carolina is 9-2 for the season and will face East Carolina University next Tuesday (Sept. 19) at 7:00 p.m. in Carmichael Auditorium.
