Men's Soccer Opens Season With 4-1 Win Over Illinois-Chicago

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - North Carolina's Chris Carrieri scored a goal in each half to lead the 24th-ranked Tar Heels (1-0) to a 4-1 victory over Illinois Chicago (0-1) in round one of the UAB Nike Classic at West Campus Field.
Jay Batt opened the scoring for Carolina in the 11th minute, putting back a rebound off the goal post on a miss by Noz Yamauchi. Carrieri made the score 2-0 UNC at the 21:17 mark, putting back a rebound on a missed shot by Chris Leitch.
UIC battled back to make the score 2-1 less than a minute later, as Greg Chrisman scored with an assist from Ranko Tutulugdzija at 22:08.
The Tar Heels struck again just over six minutes later as senior Eddie Robinson made the score 3-1 with a goal at the 28:35 mark. UNC held the 3-1 lead at halftime.
The teams battled back and forth for most of the second half until Carrieri slammed the door in the 88th minute with a nifty goal from the left side on an assist from Mike Gell, making the score 4-1.
Carolina goalkeeper Michael Ueltschey had a fairly easy evening's work, making one save in 90 minutes, while UIC keeper Chris Jamal made six saves and allowed all four Tar Heel goals in 90 minutes.
North Carolina will take on host UAB Sunday afternoon at 3:30 pm ET, while Illinois-Chicago will face College of Charleston at 1:00 ET.
