BALTIMORE, MD. - UNC junior men's tennis player Marcio Petrone failed in his quest to earn a spot in the main singles draw of the T. Rowe Price/Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Clay Courts Championships Wednesday evening. The Brazilian junior had opened play with an upset victory over third-seeded Kristofer Stahlberg of Ole Miss but Andrew Combs of Tennessee defeated Petrone 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 Wednesday night to deny Petrone a spot in the main singles draw.
Petrone and Tar Heel teammate David Cheatwood, a senior from Fayetteville, N.C., will play in the first round of the main doubles draw sometime after 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Petrone and Cheatwood comprise one of the doubles team which made its way through qualifying to earn a main draw spot. Petrone and Cheatwood will open play Thursday afternoon against the team of Homedes and Kanegas of Southern Mississippi.
