Tar Heel Field Hockey Earns Second Victory of Weekend

HARRISONBURG, Va.-The third-ranked North Carolina field hockey team scored two goals in the final 8:08 of play Sunday to pull out to a 4-1 win over 12th-ranked James Madison at Bridgeforth Stadium. The Tar Heels improved to 8-1 on the season with their fourth win over a team currently ranked in the top 20. James Madison fell to 5-3.
UNC senior Jana Toepel scored first, just over 10 minutes into the game, on a penalty corner. Junior Abby Martin provided the assist. JMU countered with a goal by Elise van Ballegooie on a penalty corner to tie the game with 6:34 remaining in the first half. UNC senior Kristen McCann scored her 10th goal of the season from the field 4:49 before halftime to give the Tar Heels a 2-1 lead.
Carolina sophomore Meredith Keller, who tallied the first goal of her career on Saturday at Richmond, scored in the second half on an assist from senior Holly Huff to put UNC up 3-1 with just over eight minutes to play. Senior Erin Cox scored from the field with 3:43 remaining for the final result.
North Carolina is back in action this weekend with two Atlantic Coast Conference contests. On Saturday, the Tar Heels will host Wake Forest at 11:30 a.m. at Francis E. Henry Stadium. On Sunday, they travel to Durham to take on Duke at 3 p.m.
