The University of North Carolina field hockey team defeated Michigan 4-2 Sunday afternoon in St. Louis to improve to 2-0 on the season. Carolina will play its second game of the ACC/Big Ten challenge Monday at 10 a.m. Central time (11 a.m. Eastern) against Penn State before returning to Chapel Hill Monday evening.
The Tar Heels took a 2-1 halftime lead on goals from juniors Katie McDonald and Abbey Woolley. Jessica Rose scored in the first half for Michigan. Carolina's second half goals were by seniors Jana Toepel and Holly Huff, a St. Louis native who was playing before a hometown crowd. Woolley assisted on Huff's goal. Michigan added another goal by Jessie Veith, assisted by Kelli Gannon, for the final score.
UNC outshot Michigan 16-10 and had five penalty corners to the Wolverines' three.
"I'm proud of our performance today," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "It was great competition for a game this early in the season. Considering the hot, humid conditions, I'm pleased with the way our team played."
