
Tar Heel Volleyball Continues To Dominate Fall Preview

CHAPEL HILL - The North Carolina volleyball team defeated East Tennessee State in three games (15-12, 15-4, 15-0) Saturday afternoon in their first match of day two of the Carolina Fall Preview. The Tar Heels lead the tournament with a 3-0 record. The team provided a more balanced win with several players putting in solid performances.
Game One provided the greatest challenge as East Tennessee State kept the Heels to 2-10. UNC rallied back and soon the game was tied 12-12. The Heels finished the game with four unanswered points for a 15-12 victory. Freshman outside hitter Nicole Reis led with eight kills and one dig. Sophomore outside hitter Laura Greene and junior middle hitter Krista Buchholz provided five kill each.
Game two showed a more focused team and the Heels led from the beginning allowing only four total points to the Buccaneers. Freshman setter Jen Schirner led in assists with 10 and sophomore middle hitter Holly Strauss had four kills and one block assist.
Game Three started Senior outside hitter Casey Simpson in her first action of the tournament. Simpson immediately set the tempo of the game, adding four kills as the Heels went on to a 15-0 win over East Tennessee State.
In the match, the Tar Heels out-hit the Buccaneers .407 to -.011. Carolina will face off against Hofstra tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the last match of the tournament.
In other action today, Pittsburgh defeated Hofstra 3-1 (15-13, 15-5, 15-2,15-10). Stacey Renich led Pittsburgh with 18 kills and 12 digs and Marcia Thiesen was also in double-digits with 16 kills and 21 digs. Coastal Carolina defeated East Tennessee State in five games, 3-2(15-6,5-15,16-14,12-15,15-7). Jeanne Lambert led with 19 kills, 15 digs and five block assists.
