Chapel Hill, N.C. - University of North Carolina men's soccer players Chris Carrieri (Stafford, Va.) and Danny Jackson (West Park, Leeds, England) have been named to the 2000 Soccer Times All-America team. Carrieri, who led the nation in scoring this past season, was named to the first team. Jackson, the leader of the Tar Heel defense, was named to the second team. Last month, Carrieri earned the first-team honors and Jackson was named second-team All-America by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Tar Heel senior Eddie Robinson (Greensboro, N.C.) was named honorable mention All-America at defender.
Carrieri, the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, set UNC school records for goals and points in a season this fall. He led the ACC in points (64), goals (25), scoring (2.67 points per game) and goals per game (1.04). He also was second in the ACC in assists (14) and fourth in assists per game (0.58). He was named third-team All-America by the NSCAA in 1999 and has been first-team All-ACC in each of the last two years.
Jackson was the leader of a UNC defense that allowed an ACC-best 0.75 goals per game during the 2000 season. The Tar Heels also posted a conference-high 11 shutouts in 2000. Jackson, who has started each of the last 61 Tar Heel games since 1998, was named first-team All-ACC this fall after earning second-team honors in 1999.
Carolina finished its 2000 campaign with a record of 21-3, 5-1 in the ACC. The Tar Heels won the ACC Tournament and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament before losing to two-time defending national champion Indiana, 1-0, on Dec. 2 in Chapel Hill.
