Men's Tennis Ready To Open 2001 Campaign

Chapel Hill, NC - For the 2001 Tar Heels men's tennis squad the 2001 season has finally arrived. After all the fall matches and preseason tournaments, the Heels are ready to begin dual match play.
The season will kick off tomorrow, February 1, when the Heels take on the Davidson Wildcats at 2:30 p.m. The match will be held in Chapel Hill at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Cone-Kenfield center is located off of Highway 54 behind the Friday Center.
Davidson, a member of the Southern Conference, also kicks off its dual match season with the February 1 matchup. Carolina's holds a dominating edge over the Wildcats in dual match contests leading the series with a remarkable 51-1-2 record.
The Tar Heels are returning from a stellar 2000 season where the Heels finished with an 18-6 record. 2000 also saw Carolina finish second in the ACC and reach the regional finals of the NCAA tournament. Also individual accolades marked the Heels' 2000 success. Senior Tripp Phillips earned All-American status, Head Coach Sam Paul was named ACC and ITA Region II coach of the year, and David Cheatwood, Marcio Petrone, and Chad Riley all earned ACC singles flight championships.
The Heels are returning four starters from last season: David Cheatwood, Marcio Petrone, Chad Riley, and Trystan Meniane. The Tar Heels are also expecting strong support from freshman Nicholas Monroe who posted a 5-4 fall singles record.
Admission is free to all home tennis matches. Doubles play will begin at 2:30 with singles action starting at approxamently 3:45.
