CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's women's soccer team scored the last three goals of the game Friday night to break open a close match and defeat #16 Florida State 4-1 before 2,048 fans at Fetzer Field. The top-ranked Tar Heels won their 20th straight game over the past two seasons and improved to 11-0 this season, 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The Tar Heels had four different goal scorers Friday night as the Heels took over sole possession of first place in the ACC with the win. It was the Seminoles' first conference loss of the season as FSU fell to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the ACC.
UNC struck first in the 11th minute of play as Jena Kluegel scored her fifth goal of the season at 10:37. Alyssa Ramsey started the play by pushing the ball into the right corner where it was crossed by Anne Remy to the center of the box where Kluegel outjumped her defender to head the ball over Florida State freshman goalkeeper Ali Mims.
The Tar Heels' lead was short-lived, however, as confusion in the UNC defense and an opportunistic play by two Florida State players led to the tying goal at 20:30. Marte Vik Edvardsen served a ball that took a funny bounce right at the top of the penalty box. The ball fell between two UNC defenders and FSU's Jenny Garcia alertly jumped on the ball and rifled it into the lower right corner.
The goal sparked FSU which controlled the tempo for the next several minutes but Carolina regained the momentum later in the half after making several substitutions and getting fresh legs on the field. UNC capitalized at 38:53 when Catherine Reddick tallied her second goal of the season on a header. Reddick headed home a long cross from the right side by Danielle Borgman that ended up on the far post for the put away. Mary McDowell also assisted on the goal.
After leading 2-1 at the half the Tar Heels had a couple of good opportunities early in the second half, having one goal called back on a foul in the box. Then in the 51st minute FSU had an outstanding chance to tie the score as Maren Vik Edvardsen head a shot on the right post that UNC's Kristin DePlatchett stopped from point blank range.
With the lead still intact Carolina would change the whole complexion of the game with a pair of goals just 42 seconds apart in the 61st and 62nd minutes. At 60:42, Ramsey tallied her ACC leading ninth goal of the season as she headed home a heading cross by Susan Bush. Jordan Walker also assisted on the play. Shortly after, at the 61:24 mark, Remy scored her fourth goal of the season as she shot into the lower right corner from about 20 yards out. Ramsey and Walker both had their second assists of the night on the play.
The victory improved UNC head coach Anson Dorrance's career record to 498-22-11 in 23 seasons. Dorrance will go after win #499 Sunday in a matchup of the only two remaining unbeaten teams in ACC play. The Tar Heels (11-0, 3-0) will host Wake Forest (6-3-1, 2-0) at Fetzer Field at 1 p.m.
