WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--In a rematch of a game that Wake Forest won 2-0 on Sept. 26, the University of North Carolina field hockey team traveled to Winston-Salem, N.C., on Saturday and came away with the same result. This 2-0 loss, however, counts in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings, unlike the first, which was a non-conference matchup.
UNC, ranked second in this week's national coaches poll, is now 8-3 on the season, 1-1 in ACC play. Wake Forest, ranked sixth, is now 7-3 (1-1 ACC).
Wake Forest got both of its goals from junior forward Heather Aughinbaugh in the second half. She scored for the first time less than a minute into the half on a penalty corner, assisted by senior Jemima Cameron. Aughinbaugh, who had just three goals on the season coming into the game, scored unassisted from the field with 6:05 remaining for what would be the final.
The Tar Heels were awarded a penalty stroke with just under four minutes remaining, but Wake Forest goalkeeper Katie Ridd made a diving stop to keep the Tar Heels scoreless. Ridd had four saves in the game, while UNC goalkeeper Amy Tran totaled seven.
The Demon Deacons took 15 shots on goal, 10 in the second half, to UNC's nine. Wake Forest also came up with four defensive saves, including one by freshman Claire Laubach on an empty net in the first half.
"I give all the credit to Wake Forest," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We played better than we did in our last meeting with them, but Wake outplayed us today. They played outstanding defense against us."
The Tar Heels return to action on Saturday, Oct. 13, when they travel to Charlottesville to meet Virginia, the only ACC team still undefeated in conference play. UNC's next home game is Oct. 14 against Radford at 1 p.m.
