CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The fifth-ranked University of North Carolina field hockey team improved to 2-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with 4-1 win Saturday at eighth-ranked Virginia. The Tar Heels are 9-3 overall, while Virginia fell to 9-4 (1-1 ACC).
Carolina returns home Sunday to face Radford at 1 p.m. at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The Tar Heels host Old Dominion on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in a game that was rescheduled from Sept. 15, then finish the ACC regular season with a home game against Maryland on Saturday.
In Charlottesville, the Tar Heels took the lead for good less than three minutes into the game. Senior Abby Martin scored on a penalty corner, assisted by senior Abbey Woolley and junior Meredith Keller, with 32:30 remaining on the first half clock. With 13:48 to play before halftime, Martin combined with Woolley and Keller for another penalty corner score. On the day, the Tar Heels would score on all three of the penalty corners they drew.
UNC got its sole field goal, an unassisted shot by Woolley, with 8:55 left in the first half. Trailing 3-0, Virginia scored its only goal of the game on a penalty corner nine seconds before halftime.
In the second half, freshman Kerry Falgowski added another Tar Heel goal, assisted by Martin on UNC's third penalty corner. Martin, the Tar Heels' leader in goals and scoring, now has 11 goals and 29 points on the year.
Virginia, which came into the game as the only ACC team still undefeated in league play, totalled nine shots to UNC's seven and 11 penalty corners to UNC's three.
The Tar Heels and Cavaliers will meet again on Oct. 25, when Virginia travels to Chapel Hill for a non-conference matchup. That game, set for 4 p.m., was originally scheduled for Sept. 16.
