CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina scored two second-half goals and held off Maryland, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. All three of the game's goals came in a nine-minute span early in the second half. Carolina's goals were scored by David Testo and Chris Leitch, with Leitch scoring the game-winner, his first goal since his sophomore season in 1999.
The win is Carolina's fourth in a row. The Tar Heels improve to 8-2, 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland drops to 4-4-1, 0-2-1 in the ACC.
After a scoreless first half, Testo scored Carolina's first goal at the 47:08 mark, taking a pass from Marcus Storey and drilling a line drive into the lower right corner of the net, just under the outstretched hands of Terrapin goalkeeper Noah Palmer. Less than a minute later, Maryland scored off a free kick after a foul by Carolina's Logan Pause. Terp freshman Ian Rodway scored his first career goal, heading in Scott Buete's free kick at the 47:43 mark.
The Tar Heels responded and took a 2-1 lead at the 54:42 mark on a rocket from Leitch from 32 yards out. Leitch took a back pass from Pause and blasted a shot into the left of the net for his first goal in two seasons.
Less than seven minutes after Leitch's goal, UNC goalie Michael Ueltschey preserved the lead with a brilliant save, diving to his right to knock a Seth Stammler shot out of bounds. Maryland did not seriously threaten to score the rest of the game.
Ueltschey recorded five saves for the Tar Heels in goal. Palmer tallied five saves for Maryland.
Carolina will return to action next weekend at the UNC Greensboro Soccer Classic in Greensboro, N.C. The Tar Heels will face No. 9-ranked South Florida at 5 p.m. on Friday and will face Georgia State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
