WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Led by Alyssa Ramsey's Most Valuable Player performance, the #1-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels raced to a 4-0 victory Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Tournament against the 19th-ranked Florida State Seminoles. A crowd of 1,837 fans at W. Dennie Spry Stadium watched the tournament final.
Carolina was led by Ramsey, a sophomore striker, who had one goal and two assists, while senior forward Anne Remy had a goal and three assists in the contest. Ramsey also had a pair of goals on Friday night when the Tar Heels defeated Wake Forest 3-0 in the semifinals. Ramsey became the first sophomore since 1990 to win the MVP award when UNC's Kristine Lilly copped the honor.
UNC earned an automatic bid to the 2001 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament with the win and improved to 19-0 on the campaign. Florida State fell to 14-7-1 but the Seminoles are assured of an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. Bids and seedings will be announced Monday by the NCAA Women's Soccer Committee at 3 p.m.
Carolina jumped on FSU early with a goal at 2:13 of the match with freshman midfielder Sara Randolph scoring her first career goal. Senior forward Anne Remy initiated the play with a pass to the left wing to sophomore striker Alyssa Ramsey. Ramsey dribbled into the deep left corner and served a perfect cross to Randolph who flicked the ball with her right foot over FSU keeper Kerry York. Ramsey had her 13th assist of the season on the goal and Remy earned her 10th assist.
Just a couple of minutes later the Tar Heels made it 2-0 as freshman forward Anne Morrell gained possession in the midfield from Remy and fed a through ball to Ramsey who dribbled into the penalty box and buried a shot from 15 yards out to the far post. The goal was Ramsey's 14th goal of the campaign. For Morrell it was the seventh assist of the campaign and Anne Remy earned her 10th assist on the goal.
In the second half the Tar Heels struck quickly again on two counterattacks. At 54:17, Carolina goalkeeper Kristin DePlatchett served a ball from the UNC penalty box that the Tar Heels picked up in the attacking third and quickly launched an assault on the goal. Ramsey got behind the defense but her shot was saved on the line by Florida State defender Katie Beal. The ball was retrieved by Remy who shot into the open net from inside the six. Ramsey got her 14th assist on the play and Remy's goal was her ninth this season.
Moments later Carolina scored again at 57:28 on a great give-and-go play by Morrell and Remy. Morrell touched it to Remy in the box who returned the ball to Morrell who finished the play just inside the near post. Morrell's goal was her seventh this season and Remy's assist was her 11th.
Florida State had its best chances to score in the 69th minute when Amber Tollefson has a shot off a corner kick that DePlatchett made a kick save on to get it out of danger.
The Tar Heels outshot the Seminoles 17-3 in the match with FSU recording five saves and Carolina one. UNC had five corner kicks to four for the Seminoles.
