UNC Head Coach Matt Doherty
?It is certainly disappointing to lose a game. I strongly feel that it is my fault for not doing a better job of preparing our team for a zone defense and I take full responsibility for that. I put the guys in a bad position by not doing a better job of preparing them for a zone. We got exposed in that regard. I give them a lot of credit, I thought they made some shots early when we didn't and then they could just back off and really jam things inside for [Lang].?
?We need to guard better, we need to make shots and take care of the basketball. I don't think we did those things but we will do those things.?
?I don't think it is a wake-up call. We lost by 31 points in an exhibition game -- this is not a wake-up call. [Hampton] is not an ACC team, but they're a good team. They have a guard that is very good and they have some players around him that can put the ball in the basket. They're quick and some off our weaknesses got exposed. We might take some lumps, but we will get better.?
?Brian Morrison is a very good shooter, you don't expect him to go 2-10 from the three-point line. Jason Capel, 1-9 [on three-point field goals], he's a very good shooter. I think he is probably still trying to find his legs after having some time off from practice with his hamstring.?
?I need to do a better job of getting our guys ready for zone offense. I need to do a better job of giving the guys not only some set plays but some continuity against the zone and I didn't do that.?
Senior center Kris Lang on Hampton's game...
"They were hitting tough shots. You have to really tip your hat off to them. They are a good team. Hampton is a very active team. They are a scrappy team. They played hard tonight, and they were hitting tough shots."
Lang on the loss...
"I think we are a great team as well we just have to bounce back from this and we have to hit the open shots. We have to take the outside shot so we can open up the inside. Right now teams are just going to back down on the inside to make us hit the outside shot. It's really frustrating, but we have to just bounce back from this. The sun will rise tomorrow. We have to go in with a positive outlook on the fact that we didn't give up toward the end. Even when they were up 16 with four minutes to go, we did cut it down to about 7 or 6. We just have to look at it in the positive sense."
Sophomore guard Adam Boone on Carolina's defense...
"We have to pick up our defense a little bit. I think that will come. It just wasn't there tonight, and that definitely hurt."
Boone on the team's intensity...
"I think [intensity] is one of the things, especially when you have three freshmen in the line-up, adapting to the level in intensity is definitely an important key, but tonight that wasn't the difference out there. The difference tonight was that we just didn't execute against their zone. We didn't get the best shot for our team and our defense just wasn't where we needed it to be. We let them get out early and we just weren't able to dig ourselves out of that hole."
