University of North Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers was named the Chevrolet Defensive Player of the Year on Saturday at halftime of the Big 12 Championship game. As part of the award, Chevrolet will make a $2500 contribution to the UNC general scholarship fund in Peppers's name.
Peppers finished the season with 63 tackles, including 19 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. Because bowl statistics do not count, Peppers finished his UNC career with 30.5 sacks in three years. He is second to Greg Ellis (32.5) in career sacks at UNC.
This week, Peppers will head to Atlanta for the All-ACC banquet on Monday. He then heads to Houston for the Lombardi Award on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Lombardi winner will be announced on Wednesday evening. On Thursday, Peppers will fly to Orlando for the Home Depot Awards Show, which begins at 9 p.m. On Monday Dec. 10, Peppers will go to Charlotte for the Bronko Nagurski Award dinner.
