CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse program has signed five student-athletes to join the Tar Heel program for the 2002-03 season, head coach Jenny Slingluff Levy announced on Tuesday. All five are Maryland natives who signed national letters of intent in Nov. 2001.
The class includes four midfielders - Brooke Dieringer, Christin Krejcik, Melissa McCarthy and Stephanie Scurachio - and a defender, Morgan Russell.
"We're really excited about this incoming class for next fall," Slingluff Levy said on Tuesday. "We're losing a big class to graduation next spring that has been very successful at Carolina. This freshman class should be able to come in and contribute on the field sooner rather than later."
Dieringer (Davidsonville, Md.) was an honorable mention All-America as a junior last spring and is a candidate for All-America honors as a senior in 2002. A three-year starter entering her senior year, Dieringer led St. Mary's High School in goals, assists and points in 2001 and was named team MVP. She also led St. Mary's in scoring as a sophomore. She has been named first-team all-county and second-team all-Metro by the Baltimore Sun in each of the last two seasons. A tremendous student who has been named a Parvis Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society, Dieringer also led the St. Mary's field hockey team in scoring in both 2000 and 2001.
Krejcik (Baltimore, Md.) has been a starter in the central midfield at Loch Raven High School in each of the last three seasons, earning team MVP honors in 2000. An all-county, all-division and all-academic selection, Krejcik also was named to the National School Girls Mid-Atlantic Team. She also has been a starting defensive wing for the Sky Walkers 2002 club team for each of the last three years. Krejcik also has been a four-year starter on Loch Raven's soccer team, a two-year performer on the indoor track team, the sports editor of her school newspaper and a member of the National Honor Society.
McCarthy (Ellicott City, Md.) has helped lead Mt. Hebron High School to three consecutive state championships, earning All-America honors as a junior in 2001. McCarthy has twice been named Mt. Hebron's most conditioned athlete and is a three-time all-county choice. She also is a team captain and top performer for the Mt. Hebron cross country team.
Russell (Timonium, Md.) has been a two-time team captain at John Carroll High School, earning first-team all-county honors in both 1999 and 2000. She was named to the IAAM All-Star STX Festival in 2001 and has been a two-time all-county choice. Russell also is a two-time all-conference choice on the soccer field who played with the Olympic Development state team from 1997-99.
Scurachio (Ellicott City, Md.) is a teammate of McCarthy at Mt. Hebron High School. She was named first-team all-Metro in 2001 by both the Baltimore Sun and the Washington Post and was named the Howard County Player of the Year by the Post, the Sun and the Howard County Times. She was a US Lacrosse Regional All-America selection in 2001 as a junior.
