Baseball Takes 23-9 Win Over James Madison

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina opened its 2001 baseball season with a 23-9 win over James Madison on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Scott Autrey allowed two runs on six hits in six innings for the win, while JMU starter Mike Trussell went just three innings and gave up 11 runs on 11 hits for the loss.
Carolina, which scored its most opening-day runs since tallying 31 in 1981, was led at the plate by 2000 ACC Rookie of the Year Adam Greenberg, Sean Farrell and Chris Maples, who each had three-run home runs for UNC and knocked in 15 of UNC's 23 runs.
The Tar Heels jumped out to a quick lead with two runs in the top of the first. Greenberg scored UNC's first run of 2001 after he led off the bottom of the first with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. Russ Adams, who reached on an error, also scored in the first.
After two James Madison runs in the top of the third tied the game at 2, the Tar Heels exploded for nine runs on nine hits in the bottom half of the inning. Sean Farrell started the scoring barrage with a three-run homer to left. Nine batters later, he knocked in Carolina's final run of the inning on a single to right. Ryan Blake and Chad Prosser both doubled in the inning, while freshman Jeremy Cleveland had an RBI single and Greenberg, who scored twice in the inning, also had two hits and two RBIs in the third.
Carolina added five more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Maples doubled to score the first two, then Greenberg had a three-run homer to right-center field for his fourth hit in five at bats, his fourth run and fifth RBI of the game.
Seven runs in the seventh pushed UNC's lead to 23-2. Maples hit a three-run homer to left field, giving him a career-high six RBIs. Brandon Russell added a two run single in the inning and Ralph Roberts had a two-run double.
The Dukes rallied for five runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to finish the scoring. Eddie Kim (2-for-5) and Nathan Doyle (3-for-5, 3 RBIs) had multi-hit games for JMU.
Carolina had several stars at the plate: Greenberg (4-for-5, 4 runs, 5 RBIs), Adams (2-for-7, 3 runs), Farrell (2-for-4, 1 run, 4 RBIs), Blake (3-for-5, 3 runs), Maples (2-for-5, 2 runs, 6 RBIs) and Cleveland (2-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) all had multi-hit games for UNC, which had 20 hits overall.
With the win, Carolina begins the season 1-0 for the fourth consecutive year. James Madison drops to 0-2. Carolina and JMU play again Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Freshman lefty Scott Senatore will take the mound for Carolina.
