CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Freshman Jeremy Cleveland's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning broke open a scoreless game and helped ignite the North Carolina baseball team to a 3-0 win over Seton Hall Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.
Daniel Moore improved to 2-0 with his second outstanding start of the season. The freshman lefty pitched 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out four and walking two, for the win. Whitley Benson struck out three and allowed just one hit over 2.0 innings of relief for his first save. Pirate starter Isaac Pavlik gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits over 6.1 innings for the loss.
oth starters were excellent from the start with the game's first hit coming from Chad Prosser in the third. The Tar Heels threatened in the third, loading the bases with one out, but Cleveland was thrown out on a force-play at the plate and Sean Farrell flew out to center field to end the inning.
Moore and Pavlik continued to roll into the seventh before Carolina capitalized on a fielding error by Pirate second baseman Josh Schuck which allowed leadoff batter Ryan Blake to reach first. After Cleveland broke the tie with his double to score Blake, Prosser followed with a double of his own to score Cleveland and give UNC a 2-0 advantage. Prosser gave the Heels their third run of the inning and the last of the game when he scored on a wild pitch by Seton Hall reliever Scott Zadina.
One day after both Seton Hall and Carolina got 11 hits each, the two teams split eight for the entire game. Prosser was 2-for-3 for UNC, while Pirate centerfielder Mike Bascom was 2-for-4 to lead Seton Hall.
Carolina and Seton Hall wrap up the three game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. (please note time change) at Boshamer Stadium.
