Tar Heels Sweep Seton Hall With 8-7 Win On Sunday

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Ralph Roberts doubled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as North Carolina edged Seton Hall 8-7 on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels took all three games of the weekend series to improve to 9-2 overall, while the Pirates fell to 0-3 on the season.
After Seton Hall tied the game at 7-7 in the top of the seventh, Jeremy Cleveland led off the bottom half of the inning with a walk. Cleveland advanced to second on a passed ball by Pirate catcher Kevin Leighton, which set the stage for Roberts' RBI double off the left-field wall.
Scott Senatore (1-1) struck out two in 1.0 inning of scoreless relief for the win. Jason Howell earned his second save with 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Elvys Quezada (0-1) gave up one run, the game-winner, in 3.1 innings for the loss.
Seton Hall jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage in the first inning. After leadoff batter Mike Bascom walked and scored, Kevin Leighton slammed a two-run home run over the fence in right-center field for the three-run lead.
The Tar Heels responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second to pull within 3-2. Chris Maples had an RBI double and Roberts followed with an RBI triple to get the Heels on the scoreboard.
Russ Adams tied the game in the third with a double down the rain-soaked right field line to score Adam Greenberg, who led off the inning with a walk. The Tar Heels tacked on three more runs in the third for a four-run inning and a 6-3 lead. Ryan Blake and Jason Howell each had RBI singles and Blake scored on a wild pitch by reliever Jeff Barrow.
lake knocked in another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to left for a 7-4 UNC lead, before Seton Hall added an unearned run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh for a 7-7 tie.
Scott Manshack went 5.2 innings, surrendering five runs on five hits while striking out six, in his third start. Pirate starter Shawn Tarkington lasted 2.0 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits while walking one.
Howell, Maples and Roberts led the Tar Heels at the plate with two hits apiece. Blake and Roberts each tallied a pair of RBIs.
With the win, Carolina improves to 70-2 in non-conference home games since 1998. The Tar Heels are also 29-2 in the month of February now under third-year head coach Mike Fox (10-0 in 1999, 10-0 in 2000 and 9-2 in 2001).
Carolina continues its 13-game homestand Tuesday versus Davidson at 3 p.m. Next weekend the Tar Heels host UCLA for a three-game series at Boshamer Stadium. Game times are Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
