CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Wake Forest defeated North Carolina, 11-3, Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium for its first three-game sweep of the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill since 1991. The Demon Deacons won all four meetings between the two schools last year and now own a seven-game winning streak over UNC.
Pre-season All-America Cory Sullivan did it all for Wake Forest in the series-ending win. Sullivan, making his first career start, gave up just one run on three hits while striking out two over 7.0 innings for the win. Meanwhile, he was 4-for-5 at the plate, including a leadoff home run in the first and a double in the third. Sullivan knocked in three runs and also scored three times.
For the third straight day, Wake had too much firepower at the plate for Carolina, as the Demon Deacons racked up 12 hits, including four home runs.
Sullivan's leadoff home run gave Wake Forest a quick 1-0 lead and a two-out, two-run shot by Jamie Athas in the second inning put Wake on top 3-0 before the Tar Heels managed its first of three runs on the day, a solo homer by Ryan Blake in the second inning.
Wake Forest added to its 3-1 lead with a five-run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-out grand slam by Ryan Johnson, his second homer of the season.
lake knocked in a UNC run in the eighth and Brandon Russell doubled and scored in the ninth for Carolina's only other two runs.
Wake added three more runs in the top of the ninth. Steve LeFaivre accounted for two of the Demon Deacon runs with a pinch-hit homer.
Scott Autrey took the loss for UNC, dropping his 2001 record to 1-2. Autrey went a career-long 7.0 innings and he matched a career-best with six strikeouts, but the sophomore right-hander allowed eight runs on nine hits in defeat.
With the loss, Carolina drops to 15-7, 0-3 in the ACC. Wake Forest improves to 17-4, 5-1 in conference play.
The Tar Heels return to action this week with home games versus Towson on Tuesday and Wednesday at 3 p.m. Carolina hits the road this weekend for a three-game set at Florida State. The Tar Heels and Seminoles play Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
