Four Carolina Gymnasts Qualify for NCAA Regionals

Chapel Hill, N.C.-- Four members of the University of North Carolina gymnastics team qualified for the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships to be held in Gainesville, Fla., on April 7. Senior Brooke Wilson, junior Lisa Companioni and freshman Maddy Curley qualified for the all-around competition. Sophomore Natalie Halbach qualified for regionals on balance beam and sophomore Fritzie Cathcart is the first alternate on uneven bars. The last time UNC gymnasts had three all-around qualifiers was in 1994.
Wilson placed first on beam at the EAGL Championships with a score of 9.950. She was named EAGL senior Gymnast of the Year in 2001 and earned EAGL Gymnast of the Week honors seven times in her Carolina career. Wilson holds four of the five school individual records and scored the first perfect 10.0 in Tar Heel gymnastics history on balance beam on Feb. 3. Wilson's season average is a 38.932 and her season high is a school-record 39.500.
Companioni placed second on beam at the EAGL Championships with a 9.900 to tie her personal best score. Companioni was named to the All-EAGL second team on balance beam and all-around. Companioni's season average was 38.586 and her season and personal best was 39.000.
Curley place 17th in the all-around at the EAGL Championships with a 38.200. Curley's season average was a 38.300 and her season high was 38.950.
Halbach is ranked ninth in the Southeast region on balance beam with a season average of 9.770 and a personal best and season high score of 9.950. Cathcart qualified as first alternate on uneven bars with a season high a personal best score of 9.825.
Junior Monica Middleton qualified as second alternate for the all-around with a season high and personal best score of 39.175 and sophomore
The NCAA Southeast Regionals will be held at the University of Florida at 6 p.m. in Stephen C. O'Connell Center on April 7.
